Cultivating Soul at the Soule Homestead

Each week of the Summer Enrichment program, we go on a little adventure. Slathered in sunblock and bug spray, we headed to the Soule farm this week for our field trip! The Soule Homestead is an community run education center on a 120 acre farm that is leased out to various farmers.

A Hands-On Learning Experience ☀️🫐

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the friendly Director, who introduced the students to the art of planting berries. Armed with gloves and gardening tools, the students eagerly got their hands dirty and carefully tended to the fragile plants. Under the guidance of experienced volunteer community members, the students learned about the importance of soil quality, proper watering techniques, and the significance of patience and persistence in nurturing plant life.

The second group of students embraced their inner landscapers as they embarked on a trail shaping adventure. The group of kiddos worked their way through the farms Children’s Trail, trimming back the overgrown greenery from reaching across the trail. Following the trail shaping and the -fruitful- berry planting session, the groups of students reunited for a picnic under the pavilion prepared by Cohort 1 in Culinary that morning!

Unveiling the Agricultural Tapestry 🐑🧑‍🌾

To conclude our day at the homestead, the students embarked on an eye-opening farm tour led by the knowledgeable Soule team. The tour encompassed various aspects of farm operations, offering glimpses into the different facets of sustainable agriculture and animal husbandry.

From the goats in the barn to the sun bathing pigs, the students marveled at the intricate web of interconnectedness that sustains a farm. The farm tour not only broadened the students’ knowledge of agricultural practices but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the hard work and dedication that goes into bringing food to our tables. It served as a reminder of the crucial role that farmers play in our society and the importance of sustainable farming practices for a greener future. The sweet new lambs were an added bonus 😍

The field trip was a very engaging experience for the students, merging education with hands-on activities and outdoor adventures. Through planting berries, touring the farm, and shaping the children’s trail, they gained a deep appreciation for sustainable agriculture, the interconnectedness of nature, and the power of community collaboration.
